What is Kerbo Charge ‘Safe Socket’?

Charging across the pavement using a Kerbo Charge channel is only safe if your charging system has ‘PEN Fault Protection’ built into it.

However due to outdated legislation, dedicated EV chargers require planning permission (unless you have a driveway).

Safe Socket, by Kerbo Charge, is a new installation service. We install either a 3kW or 7kW external socket, a PEN fault protection device and surge protection. These are general-purpose sockets and do not require planning permission.

And we install a dedicated circuit from the socket to the fuse board to ensure it’s fully protected from overheating.

The whole package is compliant with BS 7671.

Important note about your charging cable

  • If you order a 3kW socket you’ll need a 13amp socket to Type 2 charging cable to connect the socket to your car (often called a ‘granny cable’). This is not included and needs to be purchased separately (many cars will already have the cable)

  • If you order a 7kW socket you’ll need a ‘Commando to Type 2’ cable, like this one - these cost from £200. This is not included and needs to be purchased separately.

  • 3 kW option

We typically install a Hager Sollysta IP66 Single 13A Double Pole Switched Socket, suitable for EV charging. We also install a dedicated circuit to your fuseboard or meter, and a PEN fault protection consumer unit with surge protection.

  • The electrician will contact you within three days of your order to organise your virtual survey.

The installation will then be scheduled within two weeks.

In the unlikely event your property is not suitable you’ll be refunded in full.

  • You need to have access to a ground floor power supply. Typically you’ll have a house or ground floor flat. If you’re not sure, please message us using WhatsApp below.
