Charge your electric car at home in Newport, even without a driveway
Newport, a city in South Wales, is rapidly adapting to the needs of electric vehicle (EV) owners through the development of public charging infrastructure and support for home charging solutions. For residents in suburban areas like Rogerstone, Malpas, and Caerleon, where homes often feature driveways or garages, installing a home charging station is a practical and cost-effective option.
However, for residents in more densely populated areas of Newport, such as Pillgwenlly, Maindee, and parts of the city centre, where terraced housing or flats are more common, many homes lack driveways or off-street parking. This makes installing a home charger more challenging and increases reliance on public charging infrastructure. It is estimated that around 22,000 homes in Newport do not have access to off-street parking.
Our cross-pavement channel allows residents to install a cable gully into the pavement outside their home and easily charge on the street without causing hazards, and you can save around £1,100 per year compared to using public charging.
Newport City Council is the second local authority in Wales to trial charge gullies having started working with Kerbo Charge in October 2024. Gullies have already been installed in Oakfield Road, Preston Avenue, Park Avenue and Tredegar Park View, and the council would like to hear from residents who would be interested in an installation at their property.

How it works for Newport residents
Using a public charger for a single charge can be around £25 more expensive than at home (source: Zap Map), meaning many people are taking risks and having to find alternative solutions when they don’t have a driveway. These photos show how our solution makes charging easy for residents with street parking.
Simple.
Residents plug into their home charger, feed the EV cable through the cross-pavement channel and plug into their vehicle on-street.
Safe.
The channel is completely flush which ensures there are no trip hazards for pedestrians using the footpath. It’s heel-safe too!
Secure.
Insert your cable and the specially designed lid snaps down behind just like a zip.
Frequently asked questions from Newport residents
-
Our duct takes the Type 2 cable, which is the standard cable for all UK electric cars.
-
Most charging cables are long enough to reach either one space up or one space down from directly outside your house. Still taken? We find most residents just wait until the space becomes free and then move their car over.
-
We can install in to bitumen, paving stones, and brick surfaces.
-
Although the channel is strong enough to withstand the pressure of any UK vehicle, we do not install across roads because it’s not entirely safe for you to be positioned in the roadway while you insert and remove your charging cable.
-
It is possible but not recommended - it involves ground excavation and laying of a concrete base which is often undesirable due to the permanent removal of green space.
-
Yes, we can provide both the duct and the wall mounted charging unit, or just the duct.
