Government Grants for EV Chargers at Home

As the world transitions towards electric vehicles, the UK government has issued several grants to act as an incentive for people to make a switch easier and sooner.

However, due to the number of updates to the grants, it can be quite difficult to determine what grant you can apply for and what the benefits will be if your application is successful.

Can I get a grant for an EV charger at home?

The specific grant you can apply for will be influenced by your circumstances, in particular, whether you own your property or are renting. To assist you in determining the most suitable grant for you, we have provided a comprehensive overview below of the two government grants currently available to homeowners, so you can make an informed decision about which grant is best aligned with your situation.

EV chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking

If you are the owner of, or are renting, a home with on-street parking, you can still get financial help when installing an EV charger. This new grant aims to tackle the on-street charging problem by offering £350 for those where on-street parking is viable.

Am I eligible for the EV chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking?

To be eligible for the EV chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking, you must;

  • Live at the property where you intend to install the charger.

  • Have an adequate on-street parking space (defined by your local council).

  • Obtain permission from your local council before the installation of your EV charger.

  • Have a cross-pavement charging solution installed before the installation of your EV charger.

  • Own, lease, or have a company car that is listed by the OZEV.

  • Have an EV charger installed from the OZEV’s approved model list.

You will not be eligible for the EV chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking if you;

  • Have already received a grant for your home under the Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant for renters or flat owners, or its previous versions.

  • Are planning to move or have recently moved.

  • Already have a home charger installed.

  • Want to replace your current chargepoint.

  • Want to move your existing chargepoint to a different property.

  • Have private parking like a driveway or garage.

  • Will not be installing a cross-pavement charging solution.

Deadline for the EV chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking

Currently, the EV chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking is active until the 31st of March 2025. According to the government’s website, if the grant were to end or the grant amount changes before this, the government will aim to provide 4 weeks’ notice and also honour claims made before any public announcement, subject to the grant criteria.

EV chargepoint grant for households with off-street parking

On the 1st of April 2022, the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) was replaced by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) EV chargepoint grant. This means that currently there isn’t a grant available for those who own a house with a driveway.

EV chargepoint grant for renters or flat owners

The Electric vehicle chargepoint grant for renters or flat owners (also called an EV chargepoint grant) helps cover the cost of installing a home charging socket. You can receive up to £350 or 75% of the total installation cost, (whichever is lower).

Am I eligible for the EV chargepoint grant for renters or flat owners?
